Georgia O'Keeffe Painting Study

Third grade introduces students to the ideas of abstraction. Georgia O'Keeffe is a pioneer of early abstraction and artists painting expressively with their own perspective. We study O'Keeffe as a strong woman artist who made in the art world despite her disadvantage. We look at her context in history and not only appreciate the beauty of her work but her commitment to being an artist who saw things differently. Students look at flowers up close and zoom in, trying to draw as big as they can. Then, they work with watercolor to layer colors and notice the dark and light that makes a flower's form, showing depth and perspective. A flower is an entire world.
